Terms of Service

You install WhatTheCSS, you use it. The free tier is free forever. The Pro tier is $29 (currently $19 as an early-bird price), a one-time payment for a lifetime license for personal use on one device, with all future updates. Full refunds within 14 days, no questions asked.

02Acceptance of these terms

By installing WhatTheCSS, by buying a Pro license, or by using whatthecss.dev, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, uninstall the extension and do not buy a license. If you have already bought one, you can claim a refund under the 14-day policy in section 06.

You must be old enough to enter a binding contract under the law of the country you live in (in most places, 18). The extension is intended for developers and designers and is not appropriate for children.

03The free extension

The WhatTheCSS Chrome extension is free to install and use. The free tier is genuinely useful on its own: hover any element, inspect its CSS, copy what you need, navigate the DOM, see contrast ratios, edit live. The Pro tier adds extraction power (component copy, page audits, the component library, and CodePen / HTML / Tailwind export); the free tier is not crippled to push you into Pro.

We may update the extension from time to time, delivered through the Chrome Web Store. We reserve the right to add, change, or remove features. Material changes are announced in the changelog. The free tier is provided on an as-is basis, but we commit to 90 days’ notice on the marketing site before any breaking change to it, and we will not move features that are free today behind the Pro paywall later.

04The Pro license

For a one-time payment of $29 USD (currently $19 as an early-bird price; plus any applicable taxes collected at checkout), you receive a Pro license that unlocks the features listed on the features page. The license is granted under the terms below.

+ What the license gives you

  • Lifetime access. No subscription, no renewal date.
  • Personal use. One license is for one human, granted to you personally.
  • One device. Activate on one device at a time. Move it from your license dashboard.
  • All future updates. A license activated in v0.10 also activates v1.0, v2.0, and any later major version. We will not paywall new Pro features behind a separate license tier without honouring your existing one.
  • 14-day money back. Full refund, no questions, within 14 days of purchase.
  • Offline tolerance. Your Pro state stays valid for up to 30 days through network failures, so an outage of our infrastructure cannot lock you out of features you have paid for.

− What the license does not give you

  • Source-code access. The license is for the compiled extension distributed through the Chrome Web Store.
  • Resale or sublicensing. You cannot transfer the license, sell it, share the key, or assign it to another person.
  • Team or company use. One license per human. Team licensing is on the roadmap; until then, please buy one license per person.
  • A service-level commitment. The extension is software, not a hosted service. We are not promising uptime or response times.
  • A warranty. The product is provided as-is, subject to the disclaimers in section 10.

Device activation, in detail

Your Pro license can be active on one device at a time. Each activation is tracked by a pseudonymous device identifier and a friendly device name you choose. You can see the list of currently-active devices, and deactivate any of them, on your license dashboard at whatthecss.dev/license. Devices that have not checked in for 30 days are automatically deactivated to free a slot, so you rarely have to manage this manually.

Revocation

We reserve the right to deactivate a Pro license if it is used in clear violation of these terms — for example, the same key being activated on dozens of distinct devices that appear to belong to different people, attempts to bypass the activation limit, or use in a coordinated reselling scheme. We will attempt to contact you first. We will not deactivate a license for accidental over-installation; you can always free a slot yourself from the dashboard.

05Payments, taxes, invoicing

Pro purchases are processed by Dodo Payments, which acts as the merchant of record for the sale. This means Dodo, not us:

  • collects your payment and stores your card data;
  • calculates and collects applicable taxes (VAT, GST, sales tax, etc.) for your jurisdiction;
  • issues the invoice or receipt for your purchase;
  • remits taxes to the appropriate authorities; and
  • handles chargebacks and payment disputes.

Your purchase is therefore also governed by Dodo’s terms of service and privacy policy in addition to these terms. Prices shown on the site are exclusive of taxes; the final amount, including any taxes that apply where you are, is shown by Dodo before you confirm the payment.

We receive only: your email address, the amount and currency paid, and a Dodo transaction ID. We use these to issue your license key and to honour refunds. We never see your card details. The card itself is processed on Dodo’s behalf and is tokenised at the point of entry, so neither Dodo nor we ever hold your full card number.

06Refunds

14-day money-back guarantee. No questions asked.

If WhatTheCSS isn’t for you within 14 days of purchase, email support@whatthecss.dev with your license key or Dodo order ID and we’ll refund you the full amount. We won’t ask why. We won’t try to talk you out of it.

Refunds are issued through Dodo Payments back to the original payment method, typically within 5–10 business days depending on your bank. Once the refund is processed, the license is automatically deactivated; subsequent validation attempts will fail and Pro features will return to the free tier.

After 14 days, refunds are at our discretion. We’ll usually say yes if you have a real reason — the extension stopped working on your platform, you bought it by mistake, things like that. If we revoke a license under section 04 for terms violations, no refund is owed.

Nothing in this section limits any statutory refund or consumer-protection right you have under the law of the country you live in (for example, under the EU Consumer Rights Directive, the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations, the Indian Consumer Protection Act 2019, or similar legislation).

07Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use WhatTheCSS to break the law, infringe anyone else’s rights, or harm anyone;
  • attempt to attack our infrastructure, the license endpoint, or the Chrome Web Store listing;
  • reverse-engineer, decompile, or modify the extension in order to bypass the Pro activation system (the license envelope is cryptographically signed; even if you can get around it, please don’t — the price is fair, and pirating from a one-person shop is sad);
  • share or resell your license key, sell access to your activated devices, or use one license to serve multiple people;
  • use the extension to scrape, copy, or republish content from sites in a way that infringes the site owner’s rights;
  • impersonate us or misrepresent your relationship to WhatTheCSS.

Inspecting CSS on a public website is, by itself, an entirely legitimate developer activity — that’s literally what the tool exists for. What you do with what you find is your responsibility.

08Intellectual property

The WhatTheCSS extension, the website, the name, and all related designs and content are owned by Sandipan Mukherjee and protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. Your Pro license grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to use the extension in accordance with these terms; it does not transfer ownership.

You retain all rights to your own work — the CSS you inspect, the components you save to the Pro component library, and anything you copy out of the extension. We claim no ownership over your content. The extension processes everything locally; we don’t see it.

09Third-party services

WhatTheCSS uses third-party providers to deliver parts of the product: Dodo Payments (checkout, tax, and merchant of record), Resend (transactional email for license keys, refund confirmations, and license recovery), and Cloudflare (hosting and the license endpoint at whatthecss.dev/api/license/*). When you interact with these providers as part of using WhatTheCSS, their own terms and privacy policies apply alongside ours. Specifics on what each one processes are in the Privacy Policy.

The extension also runs on top of Google Chrome and is distributed through the Chrome Web Store; your use of Chrome itself is governed by Google’s terms.

10Disclaimers

WhatTheCSS is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind — express, implied, or statutory — including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or that the extension will be uninterrupted, error-free, accurate, complete, or secure. The CSS the extension reports is best-effort based on what the browser exposes; we don’t promise it is identical to the authored source.

Nothing in this section excludes any liability that cannot be excluded under the law that applies to you as a consumer.

11Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent allowed by applicable law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages arising from your use of WhatTheCSS, including without limitation lost profits, lost data, business interruption, or loss of goodwill, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

Our total aggregate liability to you for any claim arising under or in connection with these terms or your use of WhatTheCSS is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you actually paid us for your Pro license in the twelve months preceding the claim, or (b) USD 19. Where you are a consumer in a jurisdiction that does not allow this kind of cap, the cap does not apply to you to the extent local law prohibits it.

12Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any third-party claim, demand, or proceeding (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your willful misuse of WhatTheCSS, your breach of these terms, or your violation of applicable law. This obligation does not apply to claims caused by our own negligence or breach.

13Termination

You may stop using WhatTheCSS at any time by uninstalling the extension. We may suspend or terminate your access if you materially breach these terms, after attempting to contact you where reasonable. Termination does not automatically entitle you to a refund unless covered by the 14-day policy in section 06; sections that by their nature should survive termination (intellectual property, disclaimers, liability, indemnity, governing law) will continue to apply.

14Changes to these terms

We may update these terms over time. The “Last updated” date at the top of the page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced in the changelog with at least 30 days’ notice before they take effect, and where the change materially affects existing customers’ rights, notified by email to the address on your license. Your continued use of WhatTheCSS after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. If you don’t accept them, stop using the extension; if the change happens within 14 days of your purchase, you can also request a refund under section 06.

15Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of India. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these terms or your use of WhatTheCSS is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Kolkata, West Bengal, India, except as set out in the next paragraph.

Where you are a consumer resident in a jurisdiction whose law grants you mandatory protections that override choice-of-law or choice-of-forum clauses (for example, in many EU member states, the UK, and several US states), nothing in these terms deprives you of those protections; you may bring claims in the courts of your country of residence to the extent that local law requires.

The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply to these terms.

16Contact

For anything related to these terms — refunds, license questions, disputes, or anything else — email support@whatthecss.dev or write to the postal address in section 01.

For details of what we do (and don’t do) with your data, see the Privacy Policy. The two documents together describe the whole relationship.
